Mangosteen

Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana) is a delicious fruit grown in Thailand, Brazil, Burma, Central America, Hawaii, Southern India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Northern Australia, and other tropical countries. Mangosteen is one of the most widely recognized tropical fruits and has universal appeal because of its quality in color, shape and flavor. It almost reaches mythical heights being given the nickname of the “Queen of the Fruits”. In the French Caribbean it is known as the “ Fruit of the Gods” and is in fact Thailand’s national fruit.

Mangosteen has two important components: (1) The beneficial antioxidants and (2) the medicinal properties of Xanthones. Xanthones are a unique biologically "active" compound.  Active means they couple with other molecules and become very beneficial to the systems of the body. Xanthones are anti-depressant, anti-diabetic, anti-leukemic, anti-microbial (fungus and bacteria) and anti-viral.  Xanthones enter the cell wall with antioxidants and can even kill intracell bacteria before it has a chance to mess with the cell's DNA.  Xanthones are never found alone, but in mixed molecules.  Of the 200 known Xanthones, 24 are found in the pericarp of the mangosteen fruit.  No other fruit or single food source has the quantity.
